Chelsea given seven-day deadline to complete Mateo Kovacic transfer

The Real Madrid star joined Chelsea on a season-long loan last summer and was a regular under Maurizio Sarri. Despite an impending two-window transfer ban, Chelsea have the option of signing Kovacic as he’s already a registered player at the club. Kovacic, for his part, wants to remain with the club and enjoyed his debut campaign in the English capital. Ruben Loftus-Cheek’s absence could convince Chelsea to keep Kovacic, especially given the impending transfer ban. The England international sustained an Achilles injury before the Europa League final and is unlikely to feature for the club again until November.
