Rob Holding and Ainsley Maitland-Niles in contention to be one of Arsenal’s club captains this season, says Unai Emery

Emery likes to have a number of players named as captains for the season, but currently none of those on his list are homegrown players. The Spanish boss wants to have someone who ‘understands the English spirit’ to wear the armband on occasion, and that looks like it means either Rob Holding or Ainsley Maitland-Niles. Only those two Englishmen made more than 10 appearances for Arsenal last season, which would suggest they are the only two in line for the job. ‘I want one English player in these five captains,’ Emery told a press conference in Los Angeles. Holding is still struggling with a long injury (Picture: Getty Images) ‘Last year [Granit] Xhaka, Mesut [Ozil] and Nacho [Monreal] were working as captains. But after Aaron Ramsey and Petr Cech left — and possibly Laurent Koscielny — I will want more. ‘An English player who grew up in our academy can understand the English spirit and Arsenal values. These are the qualities and more [we want]. ‘We are really happy with his [Holding’s] progress. We need his performances as a centre back. [Before] he had his injury he was really playing with big performances.’ More: TVStranger Things showrunners might have confirmed you know who is The American in season 4Murder probe launched after woman, 61, found dead at London homeUnlikely youngsters in contention to be one of Arsenal's club captains this season Holding didn’t grow up in the Arsenal academy, joining the club from Bolton Wanderers in 2016, but as Emery mentioned him specifically, he is certainly in contention. The centre-back has been out since December with an ACL injury and will miss the start of the season as he continues his recovery. The only other English players at Emery’s disposal are Carl Jenkinson, Calum Chambers, Reiss Nelson, Joe Willock, Eddie Nketiah, Emile smith Rowe and Matt Macey, none of whom are likely recipients of the armband.
